Keep your own thinking: don't delegate metacognition

By · Updated June 2026

Short answer

Delegate execution to AI. Delegate judgment of yourself to... nobody. Your goals, values, decisions, and thinking about your own work should stay in your head and on paper (your Second Brain). The average person will delegate everything and save time but lose the habit of thinking deeply. Deep thinking is what makes you different.

Keep your own thinking: don't delegate metacognition

You’re going to be tempted to hand off thinking to AI.

“Claude, what should I do about this customer problem?” AI gives you three options. You pick one. You’ve outsourced judgment.

This works for execution. It breaks for strategy.

AI is brilliant at: drafting, coding, analyzing, summarizing, exploring options.

AI is terrible at: knowing what you actually care about, deciding what’s right for your business, building your vision.

If you delegate your thinking entirely, you gradually lose the ability to think independently. Your brain atrophies.

The average person will use AI to automate everything and save hours. They’ll lose the habit of deep thinking. Someone using AI while maintaining their own thinking will be far ahead.

Your competitive advantage is not your intelligence. Plenty of people are smart. Your advantage is your judgment under uncertainty, your taste, your originality, your ability to decide when data isn’t enough.

These come from thinking. Keep them.

Frequently asked questions

Doesn't using AI for ideation help me think?

It helps you explore. It shouldn't replace your thinking. Use AI for brainstorming variations of your ideas, not for deciding which idea is right.

What if I'm too tired to think deeply?

Then rest. Don't hand off your thinking to AI and call it leverage. That's outsourcing your judgment, which is exactly what makes you valuable.

How do I keep my thinking if AI speeds everything up?

Literally write. Maintain your Second Brain. Spend time thinking before and after the AI's output. The gaps are where you think.
